EastEnders fans will be aware that a scene was set to feature this week depicting the rape of Linda Carter by her nephew Dean Wicks.

The episode featuring the scene, which implied Linda had been raped rather than showing the explicit act, aired on Monday but received 278 complaints, with a further 34 complaints being made to Ofcom.

Viewers were not happy that the scene was shown an hour before the watershed comes into play but BBC have defended their actions, saying: “EastEnders has a rich history of tackling difficult issues and Linda’s story is one of these. We have worked closely with Rape Crisis and other experts in the field to tell this story which we hope will raise awareness of sexual assaults and the issues surrounding them.”

They also said that the time in which the scene was aired was well thought out: “We have been extremely mindful of the content within the episode and the timeslot in which it was shown and at no point have there been any scenes of a graphic nature. In fact, the attack on Linda was implied and was not explicit.”
