Travelling with your little ones can be a challenge at the best of times, but this latest proposal is set to give parents a major headache.

While most airlines charge a nominal fee for children under the age of two travelling on airplanes, an airline company is considering bringing in charges for parents travelling with infants on their laps.

While the change is being proposed by a Brazilian airline, if it their proposal is granted this could set an international precedent for the introduction of full charges for children everywhere.

The decision is set to be decided upon at the end of next year, with the airline proposing a waiving of the current standing cap on fees for children under two. This cap currently stands at 10 percent of the full adult passenger’s fare.

The move comes after major changes in the air travel system in the country in recent years, particularly the reduction in domestic fares, with Brazilian airlines now challenging the government’s longstanding rules.

The proposal for amendment of children’s air travel fees is part of a broader draft that the country’s National Civil Aviation agency Anac is working on with airlines and consumer protection groups.

While the proposal is still a long way from being passed, this is certainly concerning for parents everywhere. Between taxes and luggage fees, the cost of travel is already high enough without having to pay even more for our little ones. Add that to the stress of actually travelling with your child, and this is sure to add layers of inconvenience to the process.
