Despite numerous reports to the contrary, free school meals for infants in England will not be scrapped.

Taking to Twitter to clarify the matter in the last hour, ITV political correspondent, Libby Wiener, announced that budget cuts will not affect the free school meal scheme.

According to the broadcaster's tweets, Prime Minister David Cameron took it upon himself to ensure the meal programme remained the same.

"Understand PM personally intervened to ensure free school meals are NOT on list of cuts this Autumn. #freeschoolmeals," she tweeted.

Libby then went on to offer background into the free meal scheme and offered an insight into the concern born of the possible scrapping.

"Free school meals were flagship Libdem policy but some feared scrapping them would trigger memories of 'Thatcher the milksnatcher', she tweeted this morning.

The free meal scheme, which celebrated its one-year anniversary this month, provides every child in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 with a cooked school lunch.
