A six-year-old autistic boy from New York had a lucky escape after accidentally finding himself on the Bronx River Parkway, a busy main road.

The boy was driving a minature motorized quad bike.

Three drivers saw the little boy and surrounded him, protecting him from traffic until someone was able to remove him from the road.

Joel Reyes was one of the drivers who shielded the boy. “You could barely see him driving by, especially in the parkway where people are driving, God knows, 50 or 60 miles an hour.”

The convoy managed to get the boy over to the side of the road, where they were able to pull him to safety. One of the drivers had almost hit the child when he tried to drive into a middle lane.

“It was a scary situation”, said Ana Marina Rubio, another driver. “God forbid somebody would have run into him. It could have been far worse than what it was.”

“He was quiet and confused and scared. He said, 'I want to go home. I want my mom,'”

The boy was thankfully unharmed and has been returned to his family, who live about a mile from where he was found.

An investigation has been launched into the incident. Officials state there is no history of negligence with the family.
