A teacher who appeared on Channel 4’s documentary series Educating Yorkshire has been banned from the classroom for life after admitting to have sexual relations with two former students.

Neil Giffin admitted to having relationships with two 18-year-old girls between 2007 and 2008, as well as sending ‘inappropriate’ messages to three others from 2012 to 2014.

The 35-year-old confessed to the relationships before the National College of Teaching and Leadership, admitting to contacting the girls via social media after they had graduated.

In the messages sent to the girls, Giffin spoke about cross-dressing and sexual fantasies, outlining one about a girl sitting on top of him in a school uniform while smoking a cigarette.

Giffin reportedly used a number of fake names to contact the former pupils so as not to draw attention to their connection on social media.

Appearing before a panel, Giffin admitted to ‘becoming intimate’ with one ex-pupil while she was studying in university, and having sex with another girl referred to as Pupil E during the same period.

Giffin told the panel that he sent the messages as a form of escape from his job, as well as citing financial worries as a motivation behind them.

The panel, however, rejected his excuses and delivered a ruling of unacceptable professional conduct due to his inappropriate relationship with the pupil he was teaching. As a result, Giffin has been prohibited from teaching in any school, sixth form college, relevant youth accommodation or children’s home in England.

This is the latest worrying case to emerge this week involving a teacher and inappropriate behaviour towards a pupil, with Kentucky teacher Ashley Silas is facing charges of assault for dragging a six-year-old student along the floor by his wrist.
