Storm Desmond battered the country over the weekend, with many families forced to evacuate their homes due to severe flooding.

At least 55,000 families in the northwest of England have been left without power due to the floods, and while storm faults would be dealt with today, flooding faults would take significantly longer.

The RNLI's flood rescue team was deployed to Cumbria after many rivers reached their highest ever recorded levels and river levels are still rising in Carlisle,  a day after residents in parts of Keswick and Appleby were evacuated.

Due to the severity of the destruction left by the storm, four reception centres have been set up to help families in Carlisle who have been forced to leave their homes.

  1. Greystone Community Centre, Close Street
  2. Richard Rose Morton Academy
  3. Carlisle Sea Cadets, Nicholson Street
  4. Trinity Church, Wigton Road

Police and members of the military will be on the streets today, informing residents in the areas most at risk.

The Met Office have lifted the red and amber weather warnings for the north but a yellow rain warning has been issued for northwest England and southwest Scotland on Monday.

Several major roads and motorway junctions were closed due to flooding and dozens of train services have been cancelled or delayed.
