A family dog in Florida has been left fighting for his life after he received three snake bites trying to protect his young owner.

Seven-year-old Molly Deluca and two-year-old Haus were outside in the garden when Molly’s grandmother noticed him acting kind of strangely.

“[Her grandmother] saw him jump back, and go forward, and jump back and go forward," explained Molly’s mum, Donya, to Fox 13.

"He was just, kind of, holding his ground."

In fact, the huge Alsatian was actually fighting off a rattlesnake and protecting young Molly from attack in the process.

"Just based on temperament, he was standing up for my daughter, he was standing between, he didn't budge," Donya said.

"He kept taking hits, she was on the other side of him, and so was my mom."

After receiving so many bites, Haus’ condition is being described as “touch and go” and is currently on an anti-venom drip in the ICU at BluePearl Vet Hospital.

What a truly courageous dog, we hope he has a full recovery.
