We have witnessed many social media crazes over the past number of years, and few of them have been innocent. The latest one, the salt and ice challenge, is no different.

The salt and ice challenge, which has risen to prominence this month, sees tweens and teens placing ice and salt together on their skin.

When the two combine, the salt lowers the temperature of the ice dramatically, in some cases causing frostbite on the skin.

The ‘challenge’ aspect is frightening: the goal is to keep the salt and ice on the skin for as long as the person can bear. Photographic proof is then posted to social media.

As you can imagine, the challenge has caused some serious injuries, with some children ending up with chemical burns.

And, worryingly, many others have not realised that their injuries were so extensive, as their skin has been too numb to feel the damage.

While parents have been sharing the shocking results of their children’s injuries online, authorities have come out to warn schools and families to be vigilant.

An NSPCC spokesperson said: “It’s important for schools to keep a close eye on all emerging trends, and we welcome the police’s warning to head teachers.”

“The rise of social media has contributed to increasing peer pressure amongst children, and this ‘craze’ is another clear example of the risks.”
