9-year-old Lailah Khan is one kind little girl.
She recently wrote to her local volunteer firefighters in Pikesville, Maryland, thanking them for all their hard work and enclosing a $10 donation.
“The letter said, ‘can you please donate and help out,’ so I thought I would like to do that, because I haven’t done something like that,” Lailah told local media. “I didn't know it was going to turn out like this.”
The sweet letter touched the firefighters, used to working long hours and in dangerous conditions for little recognition.
“It was just one of those letters that had everybody stop and read it. And it made us pause. It was nice to see folks especially that young appreciate what our firefighters and EMTs do every day,” Captain Scott Goldstein of the Pikesville Volunteer Fire Department said.
Now the fire station are repaying her in a big way. The fire truck was deployed to take her to school, and Lailah was gifted with her own fire helmet, t-shirt and badge.
“When I was riding by here everyone was going ‘hi Lailah,’ I was saying ‘oh my god,’ it was really cool,” she recalled.
According to the principle of her elementary school, Lailah is known for being a caring and considerate student.
“We are just so impressed and proud of her. It’s not surprising though, because she is an amazingly kind student,” said Bedford Elementary principal Christina Connolly. “She does acts of kindness all the time and we’re just glad she’s being recognised in this way.”
“The volunteers help people if there’s a fire. They help people if they fall off of something,” Lailah continued. “I feel thankful for them."
Lailah and her family have also been invited to the the fire station for dinner this week, something that the honorary firefighter is really looking forward to.
