With her gran's 80th birthday on the horizon, Lorraine Butler wanted to mark it by doing something really special.
So she booked Olive Chester a trip from her native Ireland to London, where Russia-based Lorraine would meet her.
Well, that’s what she told Olive anyway.
But instead, Lorraine travelled to Shannon in the west of Ireland to surprise her, telling her that she knew Olive was a nervous flyer.
Then things got even better. They went up to the check-in desk, where the staff member (who knew all about Lorraine’s plotting) informed Olive about her flight to JFK.
Adorably, the old lady doesn’t take it in. It’s only when the woman mentions that she’ll have to clear US customs for her flight to New York that she stops in her tracks.
Olive turns to her granddaughter now. “Where?,” she says.
“You’re going to New York,” Lorraine replies.
Even when the check-in woman confirms this, Olive isn’t sure what to think.
“Am I?,” she says.
“Yeah,” Lorraine says.
That’s where it gets really heartwarming, with Olive fighting back the tears. She and Lorraine are currently living it up in the Big Apple with nothing but cocktails for the octogenarian!
