There is something so magical about Christmas time and while we may try to make it less materialistic, Santa will always play a role in the season. But, unfortunately, a time will come when your youngster will question his existence and start to ask tricky questions.

How you answer is up to whether you want them to know the truth or give them a few more years of believing, either way these tips will help you out:

Ask them where their curiosity has come from

Ask your little one where their curiosity is coming from as it may simply be another child who has found out the truth and is telling everyone. For instances like this, if you feel that your little one does still believe, you can help them to prolong the magic. However, if the whole thing is starting to seem pretty illogical to your youngster, it's time to come clean.

Try to figure out what they do believe

Once you have established what they still believe in you can handle the question better. If they are questioning certain aspects but still believe in the whole thing all you need to do is reassure them. While young children might question the belief, they aren’t necessarily ready to know the truth, unless of course you want them to.

Tell the truth

If you feel your child is ready or you feel they are really struggling to believe, it’s time to tell them the truth. Your little one might be upset or they might even be angry at you for lying to them, so you need to be very careful how you handle this.

Give Santa a new meaning

Instead of getting rid of the whole idea of Santa, why not turn him into what Christmas is all about - giving to others and being kind. Talk about the story of Saint Nicholas, the real Santa Claus, so they understand where the whole concept of the man in red came from. While the man and his flying reindeer might not be real, there will always be some form of him.

Tell them to be careful who they tell

Even if your youngster is able to handle the truth doesn’t mean other kids their age will be. This is why it is important your child doesn’t go around telling everyone that Santa isn’t real as they will just cause upset.
