With the autumn just around the corner and the winter not too far behind it, you will find your summer plants starting to die off. However, this doesn’t mean your garden has to be without colour for the next six to eight months. When it comes to winter planting, you need to choose flowers that are sturdy and able to take on extreme weather.

Here are five plants to ensure you have colour all through the winter:

Calendula or Pot Marigold
Calendulas have a daisy-like appearance and can be bright orange, yellow, apricot or cream. They bloom from autumn to spring and are ideal for mild winter climates, so you should bring them in when the frost hits. They can adapt to most soil types.

Sarcococca hookeriana var digyna or Christmas plant
This is an evergreen flower and has an incredible scent. They grow well in shade and bloom in the late winter or early spring. They are great for borders and are easy to care for.

Daphne bholua 'Jacqueline Postill'
Another highly fragrant plant, this one has a purple/pink flower that blooms in late winter early spring. It can reach heights of 1.5 metres and needs the equivalent in width to grow.

Cornus Alberta sibirica or Westonbirt Dogwood
This deciduous shrub is an earlier spring bloomer - March/April - but requires very low maintenance. It likes well-drained soil and flourishes with full or partial sunlight and has yellow flowers with cherry red berries that are edible. It works as a hedge or small tree and is easy to maintain.

Hamamelis Pallida or Witch Hazel
This plant is noted for its yellow flower and its winter heartiness. It does well in frost and its flower appears at the end of late winter early spring. With its gorgeous smell and unusual appearance it is perfect for your winter garden.
