There is nothing quite like a goal to give you the push and motivation you need to get things done. And the sense of accomplishment once it’s reached is so rewarding that it is definitely something we need to share it with our kids!

With these six  tips your little one will be setting and completing goals all over the place:

Let them choose their own goal

It is important you don’t tell your child which goal to set. While you might prefer them to master a specific school topic within a certain amount of time, they might prefer to build something or learn how to do something like ride a bike.

Get involved

They will need a little guiding hand to help them stay motivated to reach their goal; so a gentle reminder every now and again will help them stay on top of things. However, it is important you are not too involved!

Don’t have the finishing date too far away

A month to you might fly in but to your child it can feel like a lifetime. Make sure you help them set a goal with a reasonable end time so that your little one won’t get bored of it.

Make it a reachable goal

It is important you help your child make a reachable goal. While we don’t mean it needs to be something too easily achieved – this just defeats the purpose, one that challenges them enough to be excited by it, but not too hard that they will give up too easily is what you need to aim for.

Break the goal down

If they really want to learn how to play a new instrument, help them break their final goal down into smaller, easily achievable and more manageable goals.  Then every time the reach one goal they can create another smaller one before finally reaching their main goal.

Reward

Make sure you reward them for setting the goal and for sticking to it. And while the reward at the end will be completing the task they've set, a pat on the back or a well done from you will be the cherry on the top.
