Telling your older child that you are expecting doesn’t always go to plan, and it can be met with reactions varying from delight to anger.

And while it can be a little disconcerting if they aren’t as pleased about the prospect of being an older sibling, there are ways to help them adjust to the changes.

Talk to them about their feelings

Make sure you give your older child the opportunity to be open and honest with their feelings. This will help them to express their emotions in a healthy way and if they are feeling frustrated or alone, talking to you will mean you can both work together to make them feel better.

Offer them plenty of one-to-one time

Having a newborn around the house can be pretty hectic, but try to schedule in one-to-one time with your youngster so that they don’t feel pushed out by the new arrival.

Involve them

Get them involved in baby tasks like choosing the day’s outfit, nappy changing and even bath time. Once your youngster knows they have a role to play they will become more at ease with the baby.

Be excited about their role

Make sure you highlight the role that they will play in their young sibling’s life and encourage them to become excited about what the future holds.

Get a gift for each

Take your older child shopping for a gift that they can give to their new brother or sister to welcome them to the family, and make sure you buy a gift from baby to give to them.

Don’t sweat the small stuff

It is only natural that your older child will have some form of resentment towards the new baby, and while you shouldn’t accept violence or any forms of aggression, don't sweat the small stuff. Instead try to understand where their negative feelings are coming from and work it out.

Don’t talk about the baby all the time

We know it will be difficult, but don't talk about the baby all the time. Enquire about your older child’s day at school and show an interest in their activities, so that they know they are just as important to you as the baby is.
