Family holidays can be expensive, especially when you can only go during the school holidays when prices are considerably higher. While you are less likely to be able to pick up a bargain trip when the kids are off, there are other ways to help you keep the costs down.

How you get there
Going by boat can be considerably cheaper, especially when you factor in the fact that you won’t need to rent a car while you are there. It also means you can bring as much as you can fit into the car, so you will have to buy less basics when you arrive.

Be flexi with your weeks
While you are pretty restricted with your dates, choosing the latest possible week in August can help you to save some money, as most people go in July and the beginning of August.

Avoid the summer expense
If possible, why not avoid the summer holiday rush by putting your family trip off until the October mid-term. While the weather may not be as good as July, if you pick somewhere like Seville or Athens, the weather can actually be more family-friendly.

Avoid the frills
Unless you really need them, avoid the frills airlines may offer you. You don’t need airline travel insurance if you have your own and try to just check in one bag to help keep the costs down. Everyone gets a carry-on bag, including kids, so try to fit everything you need into these. A lot of airlines charge you if you don’t check in online so make sure you do this and bring your own transparent bags for your liquids - many airports charge you for these.

Time your flight
While it may be easier to get an afternoon flight, try to go for a late night one or an early morning one to help you save a significant amount on your airfare.

Bring your own food
No matter what way you are travelling – air, sea, train or car – make sure you bring a packed lunch for the whole family. Buying food can start to add up, especially when you have several hungry mounths to fill.

Walk
The best way to experience a new area is to walk around it, you will also save a fortune in travelling costs. However, if you are a little way out, opt for a travel pass or city sightseeing pass, especially if you plan on doing a lot of travelling and sightseeing.

Go self-catering
Self-catering is a great option, especially if you have young kids. This way you can do one big shop at the start of the week for breakfast, lunch and dinner and save money on eating out.
