There are probably a hundred things you’d rather be doing than cleaning the house.

Unfortunately, apart from paying someone else to do it for you, there’s just no way around it.

Here are a few tips to make your cleaning chores that bit less painful, and maybe even rather fun.

Set a timer: To stop yourself feeling overwhelmed by housework, set a timer for a short length of time. 20 minutes always seems manageable. Give yourself permission to stop after the timer goes off, as long as you stay focused and moving during those 20 minutes.

Play music: The same thing that can motivate you to get through your workout can also get you cleaning. Make a 20-minute-long playlist of your favourite music and get cleaning - until the music is up. You might even find yourself cleaning on, just until your favourite song has finished.

Reward yourself: Don't allow yourself to watch that TV show you’ve taped, or go for that manicure you’ve promised yourself until that chore you set out to do is completely ticked off the list. This way, you're motivated to get the job done because there's something rewarding waiting as soon as you're finished.

Do one small task a day: By giving yourself one task to do each day, you’ll find you’ve gotten a lot more done by the end of the week than you thought. By Sunday you'll be relaxing in your spotless home instead of spending the weekend cleaning.

Invite visitors: This is the strongest motivation there is for cleaning the house from top to bottom. If you don’t want that one fussy friend running her finger over your mantelpiece for dust, you’ll find yourself getting stuck into the chores you’ve been putting off for days.

Try a new cleaning product: Much like a new dress you can't wait to show-off, if you invest in a fancy new cleaning product, it may motivate you to try it out.
