Your school age child will learn by observing, listening, exploring, testing and asking queations..Your school child will enjoy learning when he is interested, engaged and gets involved in making decisions and organising activities.

You can help your child learn by:
  • Responding to her efforts and invitations as she plays and learns.
  • Encouraging her to try new experiences
  • Taking turns in games and activities.
  • Playing rhyming, letter and number games together.
  • Using simple language and ‘playing’ with words and word meanings, such as clapping out the syllables of words or playing word association games.
  • Continuing to read to your child, even if she can read by herself.
  • Explaining new words to her in books, TV programmes and on signs.
  • Watching the news together and talking about what’s happening.
  • Limiting distractions, for instance, turning off the TV while she is reading or drawing.
  • Avoiding overloading her with information, instead provide her with a simple explanation. If she has further questions, she will ask.
  • Helping to find out what she’s good at by trying lots of different activities.
  • Showing an interest in her activities, if she enjoys playing an instrument, ask her about the music she likes to play and get her to do a performance for you.
  • Establishing a routine of good homework practice after school. Try to get her to do it at the same time each day.
  • Building a good relationship with your child’s school and teacher and communicating regularly about your child’s progress academically, socially and behaviourally.
Remember, as your child’s first teacher your child will be learning from you over the years
