A heart-wrenching letter written by a foster child to his late dad has launched a worldwide search for the young author.

Stuart McColl was out for a walk on Monday, in a field in Dunfermline, when he stumbled upon a deflated helium balloon with a letter attached.

Heartbreaking on every level, the letter was penned by a little boy to his late father in ‘heaven’.

In the letter, the child explains that his mum is sick, and his ‘dream’ is to one morning wake up and find a letter from his father under his pillow.

The full letter reads:

“Hi dad, just writing a letter to tell you I'm missing you and tell you news!

I'm sure you know I'm in foster care ‘cause Mom is sick and my ear is blocked from Monday.

Tomorrow we're leaving.

I really miss school and you. I know you’re up in heaven, but are you safe?

Oh ya, before I go, here's my dream and Xmas list.

My dream is for you, my daddy, to put a note under my pillow that you wrote.

My Xmas list: boots/studs, Astros, rebounder net, new Premier League ball, Real Madrid jersey and shorts.

Bye Daddy, I love you.”

Stuart is naturally eager to identify and meet the letter's author, admitting that the note was ‘too sad to ignore’.

He told local newspaper the Dunfermline Press: “I’ve never done anything like this before, but it’s a really tragic story, so it would be great to do something to help this person who is having such a tough time.”

The story has gone viral around the internet, so we imagine it won’t be too long before someone comes forward.
