Online shopping is a great way to buy clothes, groceries or even gifts without having to bundle the kids up in the car and traipse around the stores for an hour or two. However, while it is extremely handy and convenient, you always need to have your guard up in case of scams.

In most instances common sense prevails, but there are other ways you can protect yourself and your finances.

1. Only use apps downloaded from a trusted source

If shopping on your phone make sure you only use apps that have been downloaded from a reputable source, such as the Android Market, or the Apple Store. And make sure you read the ‘permissions’ it asks for before you agree to it.

2. Make sure you only use a secure Wi-Fi network

Using public Wi-Fi leaves you open to fraud as your passwords and billing information can be hacked, so only make purchases on a secure line.

3. Only use trusted websites

Avoid clicking on any links that say they’ll direct you to the website you want, as they could be a phishing scam, and never input your details into a site that you are uneasy about.

4. Sign up to a secure payment method

While they can be a bit of a nuisance when you can’t remember your password, Verified by Visa or Mastercard SecureCode will mean your card is extra protected.

5. Make sure the website is secure

Before you give any card details online make sure the site you are on has a padlock in the URL or the bottom right hand corner of the browser window.
