There is nothing worse than having to deal with a flight delay when you are travelling with kids. With each and every passing minute your stress levels will rise, as you try to stop them from swinging on the chairs or throwing a tantrum.

If you are unfortunate enough to be stuck waiting on takeoff, here are five things you can do to keep both yourself and the kids sane.

Fail to prepare, prepare to fail
Factor in flight delays when it comes to packing. Fill up on toys, books, colours - anything that will keep your little one happy. While it might mean an extra bag to carry or one that is a little heavier, you will be grateful when you are stuck in departure.

Go on an adventure
Everyone loves a good adventure. Write down a list of five things that you want to find in the airport and go in search of them. This will keep both you and the kids happy, for a little while at least.

Have something to eat
A hungry child is a cranky one, so make sure you go grab some food. If anything, it will break up the monotony of waiting around.

Have a little race
Use this time to tire your kids out so that they will sleep on the plane. Find an empty gate and let them run wild, obviously ensuring they are disturbing anyone else.

Have a nap
Keep to the schedule as much as possible. If your little one is due a nap, try to settle them as best you can. Trying to keep them awake for the flight might just backfire as they will simply become overtired, which is never a good thing.
