We LOVE this!
We all hear those riddles as kids – you know the ones that show up the stereotypical attitudes towards women in society? Like oh, the doctor was his dad, because there’s no way a doctor could be a woman. That sort of thing.
Well one kid’s answer to one of these riddles was SO far removed from the answer his own dad and granddad gave many years before, it shows in a truly amazing way just how far we’ve come.
“When I was 7, my dad told me a riddle,” dad Eric March wrote in Upworthy. “A man and his son are driving in their car when they are hit by a tractor-trailer. The father dies instantly. The son is badly injured. Paramedics rush him to the hospital.
“As he is being wheeled into the operating room, the surgeon takes one look the boy and says: ‘I can't operate on him. He's my son’.
“How is that possible?!”
And straight away, it being the 1990s, he replied, “The doctor is his mom!”
In the 1960s, his own dad had been asked the question – and he struggled with the answer, because back then, not a lot of women actually worked outside the home.
So 21 years later, when Eric was a dad himself, he asked his own son the exact same riddle.
And without missing a beat he responded: “It’s his other dad.”
Amazing!
