A father who became disillusioned by the cost of running a house decided to build a ‘Hobbit home’ for his family with his own two hands – and the results are phenomenal.

Simon Dale, 32, from Wales, grew tired of the exorbitant costs of raising his young family in a modern home, and decided to opt for a more affordable and environmentally-friendly alternative.

With no formal carpentry training or skills, the father-of-two built a home up literally from the ground, using mud for the foundation, and collecting pieces of wood for the frame.

The family lived without electricity or a bathroom for the duration of the building work, often camping in nearby woodlands while Simon worked.

With the help of his father-in-law and friends, Simon managed to complete the impressive project in just four months, spending $5,000 on extra materials for the house.

As you can see from these photos, what Simon managed to create was an absolute masterpiece which, he gladly reports, is a warm and safe home to the family.

The house is as natural on the inside as it is on the outside, too, with Simon explaining that the family use a compost toilet, a wood burner heater and solar panels.

Speaking proudly about his amazing project, Simon said: “It's fun. Living your own life in your own way is rewarding. Following our dreams keeps our souls alive."
