A decision has finally been made over the guardianship of Modern Family actress Ariel Winter (16).

Shanelle Gray, Ariel’s older sister, has been granted permanent guardianship after their mother was petitioned for subjecting the teen to physical and emotional abuse.

Shanelle was granted temporary guardianship in 2012 after Chrisoula Workman was accused of a number of negligent acts, including depriving Ariel of food to help her lose weight.

Ariel, who plays Alex Dunphy on the hit show, was present in court for the ruling and reportedly broke down crying after her mother played a video of family photos.

Ariel has opened up about her family problems in the past, saying: "I didn't know my sister much growing up, and I wasn't really allowed to see her. I know now that my sister is the type of person I'd aspire to grow up to be like.”

Ariel is to continue living with her sister and brother-in-law and it really seems like this arrangement is having a positive effect on the actress.

"I've never had a curfew before. My life is definitely more normal … I didn't have many friends. It was all about work. Nowadays, my sister's like, 'You're supposed to have friends. You're supposed to go out on Friday and Saturday nights.’”

"I had body insecurities when I was younger. I still do. Every girl has insecurities — mine were heightened at the time because my mother wasn't supportive. Now, my sister is always making sure to tell me that I look beautiful."
