One of the best ways to get your youngster to stay cool this summer is to give them some water and let them get soaking wet! But if you're worried about filling up the paddling pool and wasting a lot of the precious resource, don’t worry, there are plenty of games they can play without you having to rack up a huge bill.

What you’ll need:

  • Water balloons
  • Water guns
  • Buckets
  • A number of sponges

1. Water balloon catch

Fill up a number of water balloons and have the kids throw them to each other without dropping them on the ground. The person who misses a catch will not only get soaked, they’ll also have to stand out until there is only one person left.

2. Water gun fight

Divide the players into two or three teams. Give each team a base camp and have them all try to get at a flag located in the middle of all camps without getting wet. When a player is soaked they’re out - the game continues until everyone is either wet or one team has caught the flag.

3. Wet sponge relay

Divide the players into teams and allocated each team a sponge and a bucket of water. Every player needs to run to the end of the race line and back again before passing it on to the next player. The next player then needs to dunk it into the water bucket before running.

4. Limbo dancing

Put the hose on full blast and have the kids limbo underneath it. Every time someone falls they’re out until there is only one left. (Remember to drop the hose each time to make it that bit harder!)

5. Sponge target practice

Fill up a bucket with water and allow a number of sponges to soak in it. On the ground, draw three circles, one inside the other, allocating different points to each. Have each player throw the sponge at the circle – the player with the most points wins.
