Homework can sometimes feel like a constant battle, with between wanting to ensure our kids complete it, but also hoping they will be motivated enough to do it without much cajoling.

If you aren't a fan of homework as a parent, you're not the only one. More than a third (36 percent) of parents feel that homework 'isn’t helpful at all' to their primary school children, according to the latest Ofsted report.

The survey, which was given to members of the Ofsted Parents Panel, found that parents of kids in secondary school have a slightly more favourable view of homework, with only 12 percent thinking it's not helpful.

As well, homework is seen as a 'huge cause of stress' in many families. Homework can be especially hard on children with SEND (special educational needs and disabilities).

Kids with SEND must put in extra effort compared their classmates just to get through the school day, so finding that they have more work when they get home can be exhausting.

Homework can also be detrimental to the health, confidence, and self-esteem of students with SEND.

A possible alternative to homework is prep at school, in which students are given time to plan and get ready for lessons through research. 72 percent of parents say prep at school is a better option that homework.

There were also interesting insights in regards to private tutoring.

More than half (52 percent) of parents say that Ofsted should take levels of private tutoring into account when conducting inspections.

Many of the parents who said this should be considered in inspections say that high levels private tutoring could inflate a school's exam results.

Those who disagree, though, think that tutoring should be regarded as a private family matter.

As well, both parents who supported considering private tutoring in inspections and those who didn't questioned the practicalities of gathering this information.

Are you surprised by the report's results, mums? Would you agree that homework isn't helpful?
