A member of the British royal family has come in for criticism today after branding breastfeeding as a “dreadful practice”.

Princess Michael of Kent, who is married to the Queen’s cousin, Prince Michael, reportedly made the comment after being asked about her feelings on the topic by a member of the public.

According to the Daily Mail, the Princess said: “My advice to women is don’t breastfeed – it’s a dreadful practice. I didn’t breastfeed. My nanny said it was disgusting.”

Needless to say, the Czech-born princess’ comments have come in for major criticism on social media.

One concerned Twitter user wrote: “Dreadful practice? This could be [very] damaging to mothers!”

The Princess went on to release a statement clarifying her words. The statement, issued by her spokesman Simon Astaire, read: “It’s not something I would do in public but everyone has a free choice.”

The controversial comments follow last weekend’s demonstration outside Claridge’s Hotel in London, during which a large crowd of mums gathered to protest after a woman was asked to cover up while breastfeeding in the restaurant.
