As a vocal women’s rights activist, it’s not surprising to learn that Salma Hayek has been teaching her seven-year-old daughter about female empowerment from the young age.

The actress was picking up an award from Equality Now at the Make Equality Reality event in Beverley Hills earlier this week, when she addressed the importance of passing on a strong message to her daughter, Valentina.

“I don’t preach to her every day,” said the 48-year-old, adding, “She’s aware that her mommy fights for the rights of women, that there are many places in the world where they are not entitled to these rights.”

The Savages actress also revealed that Valentina is an admirer of Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai, saying that her story has instilled in her an appreciation of education rights.

“She understands who she is and what she does. Because of this, it makes her appreciate her own opportunities for education,” said Salma.

The actress co-founded Chime for Change, a global organisation which campaigns for girls’ and women’s rights.
