An English teacher who bravely came out to his whole school four years ago was stunned when he received a heartfelt letter from a former student.

David Weston came out to the students of Watford Grammar School at an assembly back in 2010 and earlier this week he was sent a beautiful note which he posted to Twitter. The note, from old student Richard Miah, praises David for his courage.

"I really felt you should know that you challenged the ignorance of so many people that day," the letter reads. "I am a heterosexual man myself but have always been proactive in the fight against homophobia."

Speaking to ITV News last night, David said he had “no idea” of the impact his announcement had, and that the letter came “totally out of the blue.”

It was a “second shot at life” following a life-saving liver transplant in 2010 that prompted David to speak to his students. While recovering, the teacher made the brave decision to be more open about his sexuality. “It took me quite a long time to get round to it and to pluck up the courage,” he said.

However once David made the announcement, he said he was happily surprised to get absolutely “no negative reaction” from staff and students at the school.

Let’s hope this lovely story inspires others to be as brave and honest!
