The estradiol valerate pill is an oral contraceptive, much like the combination pill and the mini pill, however, instead of the synthetic oestrogen most combination pills use, the estradiol valerate pill contains a type of oestrogen known as estradiol valerate. This type of oestrogen is converted into the same type of oestrogen that your body normally produces, which makes it a more ‘natural’ option.
As with other pills, the progestegen in the pill causes changes to the lining of the uterus and the cervical mucus, and like other pills, it’s taken in 28 day cycles. Also like other pills, if you miss a pill, you will need to use a backup contraceptive method, like condoms, for a week.
While it does offer some benefit in the form of using oestrogen that is similar to that you already produce, this type of pill still has the side effects you expect from most pills – bloating, headaches, mood swings and bleeding problems. Some women also experience a lack of menstrual bleeding, known as amenorrhea.
It is a reliable birth control choice when used correctly, and it does give many women lighter, cramp free periods.
