Teaching kids to appreciate what they have isn't always easy. But one Chinese dad hit on a very unique way to get his son to be grateful.

Pu Wei brought his 8-year-old son Dou Ge on a week-long backpacking trip with just 100 yuan (about €13). Not only that, but they went all the way from their home city of Xi’an to Lanzhou – that’s a whopping 600km!

To save their pennies, the pair travelled on foot or hitchhiked to get from A to B. To earn a roof over their heads, they also did their fair share of hard labour. They were lucky too, though, as many strangers were quick to offer them free food and lifts.

Throughout their trip, Pu uploaded snaps of their time together to Chinese social media site, Weibo, alongside stories of how they were getting on. And it seems that, while Dou Ge learned all about life’s difficulties, he had a fab time en route.

"Dou Ge is naturally curious, and every day during this trip, whenever I see how excited he is to discover new things, it pushes me forward to go on with the trip,” he wrote.
