Bedtimes can be a huge battle and mums often sigh in relief when the story is over and the kids are settled. However, before you switch off the light and leave the room, there a few things you should say to your little one.

'What was the most fun thing you did today?'
When asked about their day, a lot of kids reply that they got up to nothing. However, bedtime can be a great chance to catch up with what you both got up to that day, as there are fewer distractions. Asking them a straight out question will help to jog their memory and it may open them up to telling you other things.

'Is there anything troubling you that mummy can help with?'
Some kids can find it difficult to open up about problems but sometimes, in the dim light of night and with no one but you around, it can be easier to get them to talk to you. Don’t push it if they don’t want to say anything, they may simply have nothing to talk about or are not ready to open up yet.

Ask them are they comfy
Asking your child if they are comfy will mean you can fix any bed problems now. Tucking them in tight before you leave will, hopefully, stop them getting up again asking you to tuck them in. Try to sort out any uncomfortable issues before you leave the room.

Tell them you love them
Knowing that someone loves them no matter what can help your child feel happy and secure. Saying it to them last thing every night will mean they will close their eyes knowing they are loved.

'Sweet dreams'
This is a common thing to say to a child, but it can help them relax into sleep knowing they will have lovely dreams.

Tell them that you are proud of them
This is a lovely thing to hear as you are nodding off. All kids want their parents to be proud of them and saying this, just as they drift off, will leave them smiling in their sleep.
