When you take your child to your local shopping centre, you'll probably try to keep them close to you in case someone tries to hurt them or take them away.

But one Australian mum discovered that there are other dangers you might not think of.

On a trip to Parramatta Westfield shopping centre in Sydney, a little girl became trapped in an escalator, and suffered painful injuries to her arm as a result.

The four-year-old's arm became caught in the handrail conveyer belt and became trapped where the belt reached the floor.

Video of the incident has emerged, showing the girl's father putting his hands to his head in horror before taking a screwdriver to the escalator in an effort to pull her free.

Security guards also brought tools to help while dozens of onlookers crowded around. Touchingly, some of them tried to comfort the little girl whose screams some shopkeepers say they'll "never forget."

Emergency services finally freed the little girl and took her to a nearby children's hospital. She was later released.

An investigation has since been launched to find out how the young girl became caught.

The escalator has been shut down until a new safety switch is fitted.

A similar incident happened to a little boy, also in Australia. He was trapped for a full hour.
