For most children, pocket money is not something you'd part with easily.

But one little girl volunteered to give hers away, and the reason for her generosity is heartrending.

Recently, we learned that a police dog named Jethro had died after being shot three times in the line of duty.

He had worked with officer Ryan Davis for the guts of three years.

Thousands of animal lovers around the world reached out to offer support and donate money to a dedicated Gofundme page in his honour.

His story really touched 11-year-old Allison, who sent officer Davis a handwritten letter - along with a generous donation - explaining that she'd saved up her pocket moeny to donate towards new bulletproof vests for the K-9 unit.

"Dear Police department," she wrote. "I sorry about Jethro. So here is my allowance for the bulletproof vests. God bless you and the dogs. Sincerely, Allison, age 11."

Officer Davis was so moved by Allison's gesture that he used the power of Facebook to track down her family. He's planning to chat to Allison and thank her for her donation in person within in the coming months.

The police department has also confirmed that, thanks to the donations, they'll be able to kit out all theiir police pooches in brand new bulletproof vests. Aww...

Follow-up: From what I understand, the little girl (Allison) who wrote the letter to Officer Ryan Davis was identified...
