Top Ten Book Characters for Costumes

A brown onesie is a great way to create this costume fairly easily. Simply cut two grey circles out of felt and pin them to the knees of the onesie. Paint your child’s face brown not forgetting to paint on the Gruffalo’s long white teeth. To finish off the look, create two horns out of cardboard and sew them to the hood. 

To recreate the look, dress your child in a white onesie, don't worry if you don’t have one as white trousers and a white jumper are a great alternative. Stuff a long dark sock and pin to the back of your child – this is Max’s tail. You can make his crown out of cardboard. Give your child whiskers to complete the look. 

This one is great for older children.  Dress them in orange clothes. Cut out the Lorax’s moustache and eyebrows from cardboard and glue yellow felt – the fluffier the better - to them. Secure the moustache onto elastic and simply pin the eyebrows to an orange hat.  

This is great for your little caterpillar - the bright colours will ensure they are not afraid of their own costume. Simply paint your child’s face red, putting green and yellow around their eyes. Dress them in all green and sew different coloured felt down their back to give the illusion of the hairs on the caterpillar. Cut out two cardboard antennae and paint them brown. Secure them to a hairband and simply pop them onto their head. 

This one is great for little Vikings. To recreate the character all you need is a green long sleeved top, a long brown furry waistcoat, brown trousers and boots with fur – Uggs would be perfect for the job. Tie a brown belt around the top and pop on a Viking hat. Get them to carry around their favourite dragon toy to complete the look. 

This one is great for kids who don’t like fussy costumes or face paint. Sew a thick yellow stripe around the middle of a blue jumper. Make sure your child's hair is as messy as possible. Finish the outfit off with blue trousers and a messy face. Perfect for little angels, who want to be horrid for the night.

This is a really simple look to recreate and is great for older children. Dress your child in a black top, green combats, a black leather jacket and black ankle boots. Complete the look with a black backpack on their back and a bow and arrow in their hand.

Halloween costumes don't have to be scary and sweet Matilda is an easy to recreate character. Dress your child in a blue baggy dress, if they have long hair simply straighten it, if not you can use a wig. Don’t forget to give your child a book to carry around – preferably one by Shakespeare or Dickens.  

This costume has been a favourite among trick-or-treaters since the first book was published. Dress your child in a white shirt, black jumper, black trousers, a stripy tie and black cape. Paint Harry’s scar on their forehead and complete the look with a wand.
