Top tips for helping your child with eczema or any dry, itchy skin issues:

Confused about your child's dry and itchy skin?  We have the low-down on what you should be doing.

The itch-scratch cycle is a neglected enemy!

Itching leads to scratching - we all know that. But apart from the itch being an annoying sensation, the scratching does a lot of physical damage to the skin, resulting in cuts, tears, worsening of their skin condition and in the longer term, scarring. Nobody wants to see their little one tormented, or making their condition worse, so the trick is to do something about it, beyond the regular creams you might use.

Saying "stop" doesn't work... we need something to get rid of the itch sensation so that they stop scratching - a little drop of menthol is super for this, and when combined with a moisturising base it doesn't dry the skin like our old friend calamine lotion does

Recommended product from the Suu Balm Range - Suu Balm Kids Dual Rapid Itch Relieving & Restoring Ceramide Moisturiser - low dose menthol to stop the scratching contained in a super gentle yet powerful moisturiser based on skin-identical ceramides to restore your child's skin barrier

Product ingredients and claims can be confusing

We see a lot of baby and kids skin cleansing products, body washes, etc that claim to be gentle, or for sensitive skin, yet still contain ingredients that aren't super gentle

A prime example of this is the cleansing ingredient sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS for short); it is too strong for sensitive or eczema skin types, and over time can lead to irritation or sensitisation, things you want to avoid; other cleansing ingredients to watch out for are sodium laureth sulfate (SLES) and cocamidopropyl betaine - all hard to pronounce and best avoided!

Recommended product from the Suu Balm Range - Suu Balm Kids Dual Soothing and Moisturising Head to Toe Wash - formulated with the most gentle cleansing agent we could find, sodium lauryl methyl isethionate, with added moisturising ingredients and a rich, creamy texture to give your child a super gentle cleanse

The face is a delicate place - go extra gentle here

Facial skin is thinner and more sensitive than the skin on our bodies, in particular near the eyes; this is true for our kids too, so when they have eczema or dry, itchy rashes on their faces, we should seek out even more gentle options for them.

Recommended product from the Suu Balm Range - Suu Balm Facial Care Cooling Itch Relief Facial Moisturiser - instead of menthol, we use menthyl lactate (also found in the mint plant) on the delicate facial skin, to relieve the itch without bothering the eyes or sensitive facial skin; along with this our facial cream has even more skin-identical ceramides than our kids cream, meaning even stronger protection for your little one's face.

Suu Balm is available from all good pharmacies nationwide.
