We’re well into the holiday season now and while we all dream of smooth sailing when we jet off to warmer climes, this isn’t always the case. There will inevitably be some hiccup along the way, but thankfully Sainsbury’s Bank has issued some very useful tips regarding what you are entitled to if you encounter a flight disruption.

Flight delays

Delays are an absolute pain in the neck, but there are certain circumstances where you are eligible for compensation or more. If you arrive hours from your scheduled arrival time and the airline is at fault, you could claim up to €600, depending on the amount of time you have spent waiting and the distance from your flight location. Check out the specifics of what you are entitled to in this helpful infographic.

Overbooked flights

In the case where a flight has been overbooked, airline staff will ask for volunteers to give up their seats; these volunteers will then be eligible to receive compensation in the form of airline vouchers, an alternative flight, or a full ticket refund.

Missed flights

Missing a connecting flight is one of those incidents that we all dread, and if it is the fault of the airline, you are entitled to some compensation. If you have more than one flight on a single ticket, the airline is responsible for organising a replacement connecting flight.

Airline insolvency

In the rare situation where an airline goes into insolvency, you are protected if you have booked an Air Travel Organiser’s Licence (ATOL). This ATOL will cover cases of flight-inclusive packages with a tour operator, flights and accommodation and/ or car hire booked at the same time/ on the next day, or flights booked with a travel company where you don’t get a valid airline ticket immediately. Be sure to always check with your travel provider to see if your trip is ATOL-protected.
