In the first flush of love, Valentine's Day is one of the most special days on the calendar.

Whether you and your partner went all out on the big day or preferred to stay low-key, having a day designated to the 'wonder of us' is pretty amazing, right?

Then the kids arrived.

It's not less special, it's just a little 'different', right ladies?!

Here are just ten differences we noticed on the big day once the pitter patter of tiny feet was heard.

Before: Discussion about what to do on the special day began a week in advance.

After: Discussion about what to do takes place that morning because you both forgot about it.

Before: Gifts were bought and wrapped days in advance.

After: You have the 24 hour petrol station to thank for every single one of your Valentine bouquets since the kids arrived.

Before: Your partner used the engraved pen you got him for Christmas to write a sweet note inside your card.

After: Your partner used the broken crayola marker he found on the coffee table to write a sweet note inside your card.

Before: You received one card on the big day.

After: You receive multiple cards and they're all the more special because they're now addressed to 'mummy'.

Before: Preparation for the night ahead involved butterflies, new shoes and lots of wine.

After: Preparation for the night ahead involves butterfly kisses, new rules for the babysitter and lots of worry.

Before: Dinner was spent gazing into each other's eyes and not needing to talk about anything in particular.

After: Dinner is spent gazing into each other's eyes and needing to discuss your youngest child's bowel movements.

Before: Dessert was lingered over and coffee was declined and replaced with more wine.

After: Dessert is ignored and coffee is ordered by the bucketful.

Before: Your husband noticed your lipstick, earrings and new perfume.

After: Your husband notices your lipstick, earrings and the fact you don't have baby sick on your skirt...for once.

Before: You spent much of the evening thanking your lucky stars you had such an amazing man in your life.

After: You spend much of the evening thanking your lucky stars your children have such an amazing father in their lives.

Before: Sex was passionate.

After: Sex is interrupted by crying babies and angst-ridden teenagers wondering why you didn't bring home a doggy bag from the restaurant.
