If you saw a sad child standing alone in one of the country’s biggest shopping centres, would you stop and check that they are okay, or would you merely walk on by? In the case of the following social experiment, sadly, the majority chose the latter option.
Key Assets Australia are currently looking for people to step up and serve as foster parents to the estimated 43,000 vulnerable children in need of care in the country.
To demonstrate the importance of fostering, and to really drive the point home, the organisation set up an eye-opening social experiment in one of Australia’s biggest shopping malls.
They placed two child actors in the forecourt of the mall, alone and upset, and filmed from afar to see how passers-by would react.
In the eight hours that the children spent standing there, only 21 people stopped to help – just let that sink in.
Among those who did stop to check that these kids were okay was a mum, who was struck by the correlation between the fostering system and the image of this sad child, lonely and confused, with no one to care for them.
Check out the video below – it really is a high-impact piece of footage.
