When it comes to keeping our little ones healthy, and avoiding all those nasty germs that they seem to pick up so easily, one little product has become very handy in recent times: hand sanitiser.

A great way to keep those tiny fingers clean, many parents pack their children off to school with a pleasant-smelling bottle of sanitiser.

However, vigilance and care are required when it comes to leaving hand sanitiser in the hands of our children, and a new research report has proven this.

Experts in the US have issued a warning, after it was revealed that the number of cases of kids under 12 poisoned as a result of ingesting hand sanitiser has risen significantly in recent years.

According to an analysis by the Georgia Poison Centre, there were 16,117 reported cases of child poisoning in 2014 – a huge jump from 2010’s figure of 3, 266 - and alcohol-based hand sanitiser is playing a major role.

The centre’s director told the news outlet that pleasant scents and flavourings have added to the danger: “A kid is not thinking this is bad for them. There are strawberry-, grape-, orange-flavoured hand sanitisers that are very appealing to kids.”
