Firefighters are the superheroes- and they don't need to wear capes to prove it.

A recent video of a Latvian fireman has been taking the Internet by storm for a fireman's heroic act of bravery.

Tomas Jaunzems of the State Fire And Rescue Service Of Latvia was called to a high rise apartment building along with his colleagues. There was a woman on the fourth floor balcony who was about to jump off.

All did she know that Tomas was one floors underneath her, waiting to catch her in mid-air. His selflessness was caught on tape and uploaded to Facebook where it has been stunning people all over the world.

“I decided to be a firefighter because I am my country’s patriot, and helping people, saving people’s lives and homes was my motivation,” he told Bored Panda. “I have been working in State Fire And Rescue Service Of Latvia for almost five years.”

When the squad arrived at the scene they realised that they couldn't access the woman on the balcony. Instead, Tomas got into the apartment directly below and got positioned to catch the falling woman.

“It was the first time I have done this, we haven’t been practising this kind of people rescue works," he explained. "It is nearly impossible to tell you what the most difficult thing was during that day because every day in firefighters’ lives is different [and] challenging. We just do the thing we do the best – help people!”

That he certainly does, when asked how many people he's saved in his career, he remains humble.

“In five years in service, there have been a lot of different situations – fires, car crashes and almost in all of them people needed help. We work in [a] team and I don’t count how many lives I have saved.”

Tomas was praised for his quick actions by the Minister for the Interior, who oversees he fire service.

“The work of the rescuers is very special – it requires courage, professionalism and the ability to act quickly and decisively in complicated and often non-standard situations," said Minister Rihards Kozlovskis. "I am proud of these two rescuers of the HGH who saved human life.”

Talk about a good catch!
