It is often suggested that watching TV is detrimental to children’s concentration – but a new study has claimed that watching films in 3D actually stimulates the brain, doubling a child’s concentration.

The study, carried out by visual technology firm RealD and led by child psychologist Dr Richard Woolfson and lecturer Patrick Fagan, showed that kids between the ages of seven and 14 perform better in tests and have twice the cognitive processing speed after watching just 20 minutes of a 3D film.

“The shortening of response times after watching 3D was almost three times as big as that gained from watching 2D; in other words, 3D helps children process aspects of their environment more quickly,” Patrick Fagan told the Press Association

“This is likely to be because 3D is a mentally stimulating experience which ‘gets the brain's juices flowing’.”

So the next time the kids are clamouring to get the cinema to watch the latest 3D blockbuster, it seems they might just have a very good reason!
