Vitamins and minerals are found in foods, we all need them in order for our body to work properly. This is especially true for growing children. Each vitamin and mineral has a special role to play, for example:
  • Vitamin D found in foods such as milk, fish and some fortified breakfast cereal helps ensure strong, healthy bones.
  • Vitamin A found in foods such as carrots are important for healthy vision
  • Vitamin C found in foods such as oranges helps the body to heal itself. Vitamin C also helps the body to better absorb iron from the foods we eat.
  • B vitamins (including vitamins B1, B2, niacin, folic acid, B6, B12) found in foods such as leafy green vegetables and fortified breakfast cereals helps the body release energy from carbohydrates. They are also important for a healthy nervous system and healthy blood.
  • Vitamin E found in foods such as whole grains and leafy green vegetables helps protect your skin and cells from damage.
  • Iron is needed for healthy blood and for growth and development. Infants and children grow more rapidly than adults therefore iron is particularly essential for them during this crucial stage. Iron is found in meat, fish, fortified breakfast cereals, and eggs and beans. Vitamin C increases the body’s ability to absorb iron, so including a glass of orange juice with a cereal breakfast can help ensure adequate iron intake.
  • Calcium, found in dairy products, canned salmon, leafy green vegetables and some fortified breakfast cereals helps keep bones and teeth healthy and strong.
