Mums who work outside the home can feel all kinds of guilt, but here's the reality: if you're happy, you're more likely to have a happy child.

And if you don’t believe that, just take a look at this little girl’s message for her mother’s workplace.

“Dear mum’s work,” wrote little Lexie on a whiteboard at her mum’s office. “This message if a thank you message for making mum happy about working. From Lexie, aka Lucy’s daughter!”

The lovely message touched mum Lucy’s heart, not least because she wasn’t always happy with her decision.

“When I first went to full-time work, I was quite miserable,” she told Essential Kids. “I had to ask them to be patient with me if I was a bit short-tempered, and they put up with a time of me being quite frustrated and cranky about work.”

But things are different these days, and clearly her kids have noticed.

“When I got my most recent job, it was the job of my dreams, and the kids know that,” she said.

While Lucy is pleased that little Lexie knows what work means to her, she’s keen to be honest about it, admitting that it’s not always a bed of roses.

“We talk about our day and I talk about work, and I share the bad things and the good things,” she said.

Lucy admits that she still feels guilty from time to time – mostly “when the kids are sick and I can’t cuddle them on the couch all day” – she got a real boost from her daughter’s heartwarming message.

“When I see a note like that from Lexie, and her understanding what I do, that’s even better than getting paid,” she said.

Aww. What a beautiful message and a touching reminder that we all need to do what’s right – for us.
