A wonderful tribute to an inspirational grandmother has seriously warmed hearts in the office today.

A post shared on the feel-good Facebook page Love What Matters featured a photo of a gorgeous ‘nana’ cuddling her grandson, accompanied with an amazing caption that gave us shivers.

It is a timely reminder not only that all people in this world are equal, and this equality can only happen in practice if we ALL work to make it happen, but that it is OUR responsibility to teach these morals to children.

“This is a picture of my son with my nana,” read the post. “This beautiful lady raised me. 40 years ago, the first African American family arrived in our suburb. They moved in right next door to my nana. No one accepted this family including my grandfather. My nana went into their home, introduced herself, nursed their children and loved them to bits. Then, her new friend was turned away from the local grocer. This outraged my nana.

“Though she was only one person, she marched into the grocer with her new friend in hand and announced. ‘If anyone treats this woman differently because of her skin colour I will never shop here again.’ (And she was a very well-known lady). It was after that day that the community started to open their minds. It is the people who teach us our values and morals that count.”

Isn’t that SO lovely? What a fantastic lady (and look at that smile!).
