How can I decrease my baby’s naps?

First, decide if your baby is ready to decrease the number of naps they take each day.  Are they ready or are you?  Your baby will tell you they are ready by basically throwing a fit day after day during a certain nap time or they may just not go to sleep.  Usually, the last nap of the day will be the first one to go.  You may notice that your baby sleeps for a shorter amount of time during naps as well.  There is no certain age at which babies should decrease the number of naps they take.

To decrease their naps, eliminate the nap, but consider putting them to bed 15 to 30 minutes earlier.  Once you decide to eliminate a nap, stick with it.  Engage your baby in stimulating activities during that time, as opposed to activities that may put them to sleep.  Try adding an outside play time during what used to be nap time or play with paint, or toys.

Know that there may be some fussiness involved as your baby adjusts to their new routine, but this shouldn’t last more than one or two weeks.
