No matter how much you try to keep it to a minimum, kids have a lot of toys. A lot.

And if your house if anything like ours, then you are no doubt constantly stepping over books, puzzles, teddies, dolls and cars, even though you just put them away.

So what’s a mum to do? Well, get organising, of course!

We’re not going to lie, it is going to be a MAMMOTH task, especially after Christmas, but it is possible and it will be so worth it in the long run.

If you are planning on tackling their room this weekend, have a read of the following tips:

1. Only keep out what they actually play with

Everything else can be put away - you can always swap it every month so it will be like they have something new to play with!

2. Do a huge cull

If they haven’t even looked at it never mind played with it in the last six months, it’s time to give it away. Be brutal, but do consult your kids beforehand – they will go mad if they find out!

3. Find a home for EVERYTHING

Whether it’s on a shelf, in a box or a drawer make sure every item has a home to go to. This will make cleaning up in the future a lot quicker!

4. Get rid of things gradually

If saying goodbye to any particular item is too hard for your little one (despite the fact they haven’t played with it in MONTHS!), try to do it gradually. One idea would be to put these types of toys into a separate box and then review things next month.

5. Have a particular play area

Whether it’s a full room, their bedroom or a corner in the living room, try to have a particular area to store the toys. This can help to keep things somewhat organised – and stop the entire house becoming a playroom.

6. Put like with like

Categories your toys by type like cars, dolls, etc., and store them together in a box. Not only will it help with organising, it will also mean that your child won’t have to root in the bottom of every box before they find what they are looking for – a mess that can quite literally bring you out in a sweat.
