They say travel broadens the mind, and it’s oh-so true, particularly for children. Being exposed to different places and cultures expands their knowledge and understanding of the world, offers new perspectives and teaches them that people are essentially the same, wherever they’re from and whatever they believe in.

Here are seven reasons to pack up the kids’ cases, pick a place on the map and just GO:

1. It brings history to life for them

Children learn about different points in history in school, but taking them to Rome to see the Colosseum in person, or nipping over to see Stonehenge, or spending a weekend in Berlin will bring their lessons to life, giving them a greater appreciation for understanding the past.

2. It teaches them more about themselves

By taking your children out of their comfort zone you’ll learn more about them and they’ll learn more about themselves. They’ll discover if they like trying new things or meeting new people, and how they react to situations they wouldn’t have come across at home.

3. It makes them curious

Children exposed to different cultures will become naturally more curious about the world, prompting critical thinking and a greater understanding about the politics and processes of other countries. Why do they do things differently? Should we try to do what they’re doing?

4. It helps you bond as a family

Sure, traveling as a family can be stressful, but a special bond is forged when people travel together as you experience new things and share adventures.

5. It expands their world (while also making it smaller)

Travel opens kids’ minds to different food, customs, weather, architecture and style of dress – amongst many other things. But at the same time, it shows them that the world isn’t quite as big as they think it is, and that we’re all connected in many different ways.

6. It teaches them compassion

Children who travel are exposed to the way that other people live – and often they aren’t as fortunate as we are. This teaches them gratitude for what they have, and compassion for those who aren’t quite so lucky. Who knows, maybe after that trip they’ll decide they want to work in human rights or for an NGO when they grow up.

7. It makes for amazing memories

Kids who travel will never forget the amazing experiences they had during this formative time, which will stand to them as they grow into adults.

Do you like to travel with your kids? If so, where did you go? And what do you think they got from it? We’d love to hear your experiences!
