The summer can be long, especially when you are trying to keep your eight-year-old happy and entertained. Thankfully, there are lots of activities that they can do at home that are not only fun, but will create lasting memories that they will cherish forever.

Water fight
Kids love anything to do with water and it doesn’t even need to be exceptionally hot outside to enjoy it. Pick up some cheap water pistols in your local toy shop and your kids are sure to have hours of fun.

Paddling pool
If it is really warm outside, a paddling pool in the garden can be a great way for them to cool down. Make sure you supervise them at all times as it can get a bit slippery both inside and outside the pool.

Sleepovers
Sleepovers during school term are usually a no-no as kids can wake up tired and may need a couple of days to get over it. However, the summer break is a perfect opportunity to have cousins or friends over to stay. If you’re lucky, the other parents might return the favour and you can have a night off.

Obstacle course
Get your kids outside by hosting an obstacle course in your garden or in the local park. Using items from your house, you can make it as long or as short as you like. Why not supply the equipment to your kids and let them create their own so you can simply relax and watch the fun.

Playdates
Invite your child’s friends over to play. This can break the monotony of playing with siblings and can break the day up a little.

Movie day
For the days when the sun doesn’t show, a movie can be a great for keeping youngsters busy. Why not enjoy an entire day devoted to watching films, line up their favourite movies, grab a duvet and some sweets and spend the next few hours chilling.

Baking
Most kids love baking so why not dedicate a day to whipping up some homemade tasty treats. Stick to simple recipes that kids can do – anything complicated can often end in an argument.

Art day
Stock up on art materials like paper, paints, glue, card etc. and allocate maybe one day a week to simply being creative. Invite your kid’s friends over, cover the furniture and let them go wild. If it’s a nice day, take it outside and you won’t have to worry about any spills.
