Most of us are far too busy cooing over the adorable new bundle of joy to really think of the new mum in question.

That’s how it is here anyway. In other countries, however, it’s tradition to help new mums and let them have a proper pampered ‘babymoon.’

So do something different – think of the mum and what she needs (even if she doesn’t know it). Here are a few gift ideas to help her feel better post-labour…

Dry shampoo

After an exhausting labour, no new mum really wants to wash her hair. But of course with visitors popping in every two minutes, she’ll want to look her best. The solution? Dry shampoo: all the shine and none of the work!

Large underwear

No matter how unglamorous they may be, there’s nothing more comfortable than a pair of big Bridget Jones-style granny pants. After the agony of childbirth and beyond, comfort definitely comes before fashion. Sexy lingerie, be damned!

Leggings

Much like with the large undergarments, a pair of comfy, stretchy leggings is all a new mum will want to wear after giving birth. Besides, they’re totally in right now!

Takeaway vouchers

She may have thought she’d only cook healthy, nutritious meals for her family, but a new mum doesn’t have the time or energy to do that all the time. That’s why a takeaway voucher will bring a smile to her face. Tasty, filling food without having to lift a finger!

Freezable meals

Naturally, you can’t eat takeaways all the time, so why not buy or cook her some meals she can stick into the freezer? This is a particularly great idea if she has children of school-going age. It will mean one less thing to think about when they come home, starving, in the afternoon.

Eye cream

Nothing can prepare you for the first time you look in the mirror post-childbirth. You feel as if someone rolled over you with a truck, and sadly, you look like it too. Luckily, a bit of quality eye cream can work wonders for those awful, dark bags beneath her peepers. And you know what they say: when you look good, you feel good.

Netflix subscription

Exhausted and overwhelmed, new mums spend a lot of time at home. What better way to keep her entertained in between feeding and nappy changes than with a Netflix subscription? No matter how sleep-deprived she is, binge-watching Orange is the New Black will give her a nice reminder that things could be much, much worse!

Coffee

Caffeine means energy and energy is something new mums need. If she’s a coffee fan, why not pick up some of her favourite beans, or some capsules if she has one of those nifty little espresso makers. Obviously, breastfeeding mums will want to go easy on the black stuff, but one or two here and there won’t do any harm.

Wine

Newborns can be stressful, and nothing de-stresses quite like a glass of vino. Why not pick up a bottle of her favourite tipple, sit down one evening and have a glass together? Again, breastfeeding mums will have to go easy, but even if she just has a few sips, she’ll be delighted with the gesture. It’ll remind her that, despite the struggles of new motherhood, life can be fun!
