“Autism acceptance at its best!”

After a recent shopping trip with her autistic son, a happy mum took to Facebook to sing the praises of a shoe shop staff member, who went out of his way to make the experience easy and enjoyable.

Mum Gem Salter was shopping with her 6-year old son River, to get him fitted for new school shoes. However, the store was crowded and noisy, overwhelming her son.

“I knew there was no way he would cope with that environment so I explained the situation to a member of staff,” she wrote in the post. “Without hesitation, Aaran led us away from the noise and crowds to a staff room and placed a Do Not Disturb sign on the door. He was very patient with River, who was anxious, and went and got lots of different shoes for him to try on.

“We left with a great pair of shoes, a very happy boy – and Aaran also gave us the store number and said they'd happily book us an appointment before the store opens so that it's quiet.
Autism acceptance at its best!”

We LOVE how this story simply shows the difference a little understanding and compassion can make for an autistic child and their parents. By recognising that this child had particular needs, Aaran turned a potentially upsetting situation into a positive, uplifting one.
